The first step to planting tomatoes upside down requires a drill. If you are using 5 gallon buckets, there is probably already a small indentation in the bottom of the bucket. Thread the plant through the bottom of the bucket, so that its leaves and stem stick out of the hole that you made. Pack your seedling material around the root structure, which is now all that is left in the bucket. Now, start with your soil. Pack soil gently around the stem of the plant and the root ball, so that it will stay in place. You can let go of the plant now, and let it rest on the soil. You have now starting growing tomatoes upside down. However, there is more to do.

Add more soil, so that the roots are entirely covered by about 2 inches. Then, aid about two cups or more of compost, and fill up the rest of the bucket with soil. You want to have the bucket filled up to about 1 inch below the bucket's surface. You should now be able to hang the bucket somewhere.
