Some gardeners swear by cotton garden gloves, other by the feel of the soil between their fingers and don’t consider the gardening experience complete unless they walk away with plenty of dirt under their fingernails.

There’s little controversy over the bare hands method. Bare is bare. People who rely on their garden gloves, however, can be pretty vocal about naming their favorites.

Gardeners who especially enjoy the natural experience of gardening, those gardeners who opt out of the use of chemicals and other synthetic substances in their perfectly natural garden, are often very loyal to their cotton gloves. Cotton itself is a very durable, natural fiber and many people consider it the most appropriate material to wear when tending a natural environment.

Other gardeners prefer their cotton gloves reinforced with some leather here and there to improve durability and provide an added degree of protection. Leather pads in the palms and on the fingertips can become especially helpful with working with thorny plants, such as roses and berries.

Modern synthetic fabrics are sometimes used, too, to reinforce cotton gloves and to improve the fit. There are many manufacturers to choose from who make gloves in all sizes, colors, and for all purposes.

The synthetic fabrics can be very nice when keeping hands warm and dry is important. Gardeners in hot, humid climates, however, seem to prefer cotton gloves because they allow perspiring hands to cool faster.

Some gardeners collect garden gloves like fashionistas collect shoes. They amass a full line of garden gloves, from cotton garden gloves to leather to synthetic and any mixture in between, just so they’ll have a wardrobe at the ready for whatever the job calls for. Or so they say.
